Jaden Kanga - Finite Element Analysis of Product Design for Manufacture

03/05/2005

Finite Element Analysis of Product Design for Manufacture – Jaden Kanga (Infomechatronics student)

From humble beginnings in 1963, and development of the first Kanga in 1980 (similar to a motorised wheelbarrow), the Jaden Kanga Group has grown into an Aussie success story by designing and manufacturing a range of versatile and innovative earthmoving equipment – including loaders, diggers, and trenchers.

In 2004, Jaden Kanga’s dedication to innovation and market development paid off, when they collected a swag of Business Excellence and Export awards including The Premier of Queensland Export Awards (Small to Medium Manufacturer) and Australian Export Awards – National Finalist (Small to Medium Manufacturer Award), just to name a couple.

Jaden has just finalised designing a new model of their popular Kanga Loader, to be launched by mid-2005. After physical testing and consumer product testing, the company has decided to also conduct a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on the new 8-Series model. Greg Peat of Jaden Kanga saw this project as a great opportunity for a senior Engineering student to gain important project experience, and for the company to gain a very valuable result.

David Donaldson, Infomechatronics student at QUT, was appointed to this project in February. The objective of David’s project is to conduct a FEA review of the current 8-Series loader, which he will complete by end of June 05.

The implementation of FEA will identify critical elements in the design. As part of David’s project, he will ensure that the Jaden Kanga quality assurance systems provide tight controls on specification and manufacturing procedures for these critical elements.

David has been using SolidWorks as the CAD (computer aided design) package for design, and COSMOS Works as the FEA software package. Greg Peat of Jaden Kanga recently commented “to date the project is progressing well and we have been able to keep pace with our rigorous schedule as a result of inviting David in to the team. Not only has David assisted in the 8-Series launch, testing and development but has shown the maturity to undertake other projects which have complimented other aspects of our business”.
