This project will suit a final year Mechanical, Electrical or Mechatronics Engineering student - with an interest in manufacturing. 

Enrolment will be in final year thesis / Masters project - Sem 1 + 2 2019. 


The successful applicant will receive a $6,000 scholarship + academic credit - thesis project enrolment (24cps-QUT, 4-6units - UQ, 2units - USQ).

APPLICANTS NOTE - you must be available to work on this project 2 days / week across both Semester 1 + 2 2019 (working around your lecture timetable for Sem1+2). This project will be your final year thesis or Masters project topic - enrolment/assessment.

Project Background / Description

This is a fantastic and limited opportunity to work with the Mars Petcare Asia Pacific Engineering team to design, procure and commission a new pet food processing and packing facility.

The new facility will incorporate world class standards in safety, quality, sustainability and efficiency.

This opportunity will provide the successful candidate with exposure to the Engineering processes of a world leading pet food manufacturer.

The business unit you’ll be assigned to for this project is Mars Birdcare Australia (Australia’s leading supplier of bird food with brands Trill, Harmony, Golden Grain and Golden Cob).  Whilst Mars Birdcare is a stand-a-lone business unit in its own right you’ll very much be connected to and collaborating with the broader engineering community in Mars Petcare Asia Pacific.

Objectives / Tasks / Project Outcomes

  • Under the guidance and mentorship of Mars Birdcare Australia Supply Manager and working alongside the Mars Petcare Asia Pacific Regional Engineering team, your primary responsibilities will be to develop a new packing room layout and to procure, install and commission new packing lines.

  • Specifically, you will have the opportunity to:

    • Collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders to design the new packing room layout applying Mars Asset Management standards, Lean Manufacturing, and Operations Management principles.
    • Develop specifications and plans necessary to determine capital expenditure and likely return on investment for project submission purposes.
    • Undertake a review of packaging technologies with external suppliers and work with the Mars Australia Commercial team to complete a RFP process for the procurement of the packaging equipment;
    • Manage the installation and commissioning of a fully functioning packing line with external suppliers and internal operators

  • Additionally, you will gain valuable hands-on experience by assisting the team with the delivery of the overall project, including the following activities:

    • Commissioning of new automated processing equipment,
    • Design and commissioning of new product drying and packing room infrastructure
    • Project management of a large capital project
    • Assist with the delivery of other site capital projects.

Skills / Experience Required

  • Current Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Electrical Engineering student (as final year thesis or Masters project – enrolment/assessment)
  • Ability to engage a broad audience from machine operators through to the Vice President for Supply Mars Petcare Asia Pacific
  • Highly numerate and comfortable to advanced level in EXCEL
  • Strong verbal and written communicator
  • Experience with AutoCAD is beneficial
  • Ability to demonstrate “Breakthrough Thinking”
  • Ability to navigate “Complex Challenges” and deal with ambiguity.
  • Be action-orientated and have the ability to manage multiple activities simultaneously
  • Knowledge of Quality / Food Safety principles and regulatory standards such as OH&S and Australian Standards.
  • General knowledge across the Engineering disciplines
  • Ability to review, analyse and design processes for improved performance using lean manufacturing principles.
