Change of timing - Semester 1+2 2020 - for M.Eng (Chemical / Materials) students

Suited to: Master of Engineering - Chemical, Materials Eng students (UQ) - who can enrol in a project across Sem1+2 2020. If you are selected, the project will be your Masters project topic so you must be eligible to enrol in the appropriate unit/s during Semester 1+2 2020.

Please check your study plan with Bev Coulter (Industry Engagement, UQ Chemical Engineering) prior to applying - to ensure you will be able to enrol in a project across Sem1+2, if selected. 

The company is looking for applicants with solid Applied Chemistry and Materials knowledge/skills. See full list of skills / background below.

The successful applicant will receive a $6,000 scholarship + academic credit for enrolment/assessment (8units spread across 2 semesters - UQ Masters project).

If selected, you must be available to work on the project onsite for 2 days/week during Semester 1 + 2 2020 (working around lecture timetables in Sem1+2).

Project Background / Description

The nano-film technology is based on proprietary metal ion polymers and is applied to materials in lithium ion battery anodes to create better electrode network structures, allowing for the increased integration of silicon as an active material and improved overall electrode performance.


Anteo Technologies is an Australian surface chemistry company with a research and development facility based in Brisbane. Anteo’s team consists of ~15 people including scientists, engineers and corporate functions.

After the successful commercialisation of a suite of products in the life science and diagnostics space, Anteo is focused on developing its nano-film binder technology, AnteoCoat™, for application in advanced battery electrodes.

Objectives / Tasks / Project Outcomes

  • Screen AnteoCoat binder and AnteoCoat particle interactions
  • Evaluation of changes in properties of metal-ion/binder complexes
  • Evaluate options to implement findings in battery slurry processing
  • Aid in the fabrication of electrode coatings
  • Aid in the assembly and testing of coin cell batteries
  • Achieve improved anode performance as determined via cell test data

The specific project activities will be determined in line with the selected student’s capabilities and interests. There are certainly several work packages they could get involved in.

Skills / Experience Required

  • Area of study (includes relevant dual degrees/disciplines) relating to chemistry, materials, and/or batteries

  • Sound understanding of one or several of the following is ideal:
    • Organic/inorganic and polymer chemistry
    • Material characterisation techniques (physical and/or chemical)
    • Electrochemistry and electrochemical analysis methods
    • Particle engineering and processing

  • Excellent communication and reporting skills (written and oral)
  • Accurate record keeping and documentation skills
  • Independent problem solving and proactive mindset
